Brampton Halt
Brampton Village, Norfolk
Brampton is one of the quiet wayside halts on the Bure Valley Railway, located just east of Aylsham Station. Brampton is a request stop only during peak season. When collecting tickets customers need to make staff aware that they wish to stop at Brampton Halt. While small in size, Brampton Village offers a gateway to a village with a remarkable history, beautiful countryside, and some of Norfolk’s most peaceful walks.
What’s at Brampton Halt
Brampton is a simple platform halt with no facilities, surrounded by fields and winding lanes. It’s particularly popular with walkers and cyclists, as the *Bure Valley Path runs alongside the railway for nine miles between Aylsham and Wroxham. The stop makes an ideal place to break a journey, explore the local countryside and Brampton Village, or enjoy a picnic as the steam trains pass by.
*Please note that the Bure Valley Path is not part of the railway and is owned and managed by the local council.
Brampton History and Sites
Brampton may be one of Norfolk’s smallest communities today, but it was once the site of the largest pottery in Roman Britain, where household wares were mass-produced and shipped along the River Bure. Archaeologists have also uncovered a Roman bathhouse and several kilns. The village is home to St Peter’s Church, a striking round-tower church with a Norman base and 15th-century octagon.
The parish also includes the hamlet of Oxnead, where the remaining service wing of Oxnead Hall stands beside the River Bure. Once home to the Paston family, its history is echoed in the nearby small church — a peaceful spot for quiet reflection.
