Steam Train And Cream Tea Takeaway On The Bure Valley Railway

A New Tradition Arrives

Introducing the Cream Tea Express

There are few things more quintessentially British than a steam train journey through the countryside, except, perhaps, a cream tea.

This season, the two come together at Bure Valley Railway from the 1st April with the introduction of the Cream Tea Express, our brand new experience designed to celebrate the simple pleasures of slow travel and timeless treats. Most importantly the cream tea is free!

We’ve designed the Cream Tea Express to be a simple, all-in experience, with your boxed cream tea included in the ticket price, so there’s nothing extra to think about on the day. It’s all part of offering great value for money, bringing together the journey and the treat in one carefully considered experience.

Running on our 3pm last steam service from Aylsham, the Cream Tea Express invites passengers to step back into a gentler pace of life. All travellers need to do before boarding, is collect their carefully prepared boxed cream tea and hot drink from the Whistlestop Café, ready to enjoy as the locomotive sets off and the Norfolk landscape rolls by.

A Taste of British Tradition

The cream tea itself has a history as rich as its ingredients. Often associated with Devon and Cornwall, the tradition of serving scones with jam and cream dates back to the 11th century, when it was offered to visitors at Tavistock Abbey. Over time, it became a much-loved ritual across Britain, a moment to pause, indulge, and enjoy good company.

Pairing this with steam travel feels only natural.

Steam railways were once the backbone of British leisure journeys, carrying families out to the coast or countryside for a day of fresh air and escape. Today, that same spirit lives on, not in a rush to get somewhere, but in enjoying the journey itself.

What makes the Cream Tea Express special isn’t just what’s included, it’s how it feels.

Whether you’re catching up with friends, celebrating something special, or simply carving out a bit of time for yourself, it’s an experience that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly new.

A New Favourite for the Season Ahead

Available from April through to November, the Cream Tea Express is set to become a new highlight in the railway’s calendar, a small but memorable way to enjoy two great British traditions, perfectly paired.

Because sometimes, the simplest afternoons are the most memorable.
