The Steam Locomotives Behind the Events

At the heart of every event is the railway’s fleet of 15-inch gauge steam locomotives, purpose-built for the line and combining traditional steam engineering with more modern heritage railway construction.

  • No.1 “Wroxham Broad” -  A 2-6-4 tank locomotive and the first engine delivered to the railway, it was designed with a larger wheelbase for improved stability and ride quality.
  • No.6 “Blickling Hall” - A 2-6-2 tank engine with a well-balanced wheel arrangement, offering good adhesion and efficiency. It is named after the historic Norfolk estate, blending regional heritage with engineering.
  • No.7 “Spitfire” - A 2-6-2 locomotive named in tribute to the legendary Supermarine Spitfire, one of Britain’s most iconic aircraft of the Second World War. Known for its free-running characteristics, it maintains speed efficiently between stops.
  • No.8 “John of Gaunt” - A 2-6-2 tank locomotive named after John of Gaunt, a key figure in medieval English history and the Duke of Lancaster. Built for sustained output, it is well-suited to heavier loadings and intensive timetables.
  • No.9 “Mark Timothy” - A 2-6-2 locomotive, named in dedication, this locomotive is a key member of the working fleet, valued for its reliable steaming and ability to maintain performance across intensive, stop-start services.

For many visitors, these engines are the main draw. Whether you’re interested in steam locomotive history, railway preservation, or simply seeing them in full working order.
