No.9 "Mark Timothy"
Steam Locomotive - No. 9 “Mark Timothy”
Originally built in 1999 by Winson Engineering as an oil-fired tank engine in the style of a County Donegal 2-6-4T, No. 9 “Mark Timothy” had a challenging start. When delivered, it faced technical problems and an overly cramped cab that limited its early use.
Following these issues, No. 9 underwent a substantial rebuild by Alan Keef Ltd in Ross-on-Wye, during which it received new cylinders, a multi-jet Lempour exhaust, and other modifications that have made it one of the most economical steam engines in service on the Bure Valley Railway. During the rebuild, it was also converted from oil firing to coal firing.
No. 9's Design & Origins
Returning to full passenger service in July 2004, No. 9 is the newest steam locomotive on the line. Its appearance is evocative of a Kitson tank engine of the former Leek & Manifold Railway, yet its mechanical architecture shares similarities with locomotives Nos. 6, 7, and 8.
The name “Mark Timothy” honours the son of the railway’s owners, a personal and meaningful tribute. Privately owned by a supporter and held on long-term loan to the railway, No. 9 brings both power and story to our steam operations.
