No.4 "Hudson Hunslet 0-4-0 Diesel Shunter"

Diesel Locomotive - No.4 Hudson Hunslet 0-4-0 Diesel Shunter

Diesel Locomotive No.4 “Hudson Hunslet” is a small but mighty member of the Bure Valley Railway fleet. Built for hard work and reliability, this characterful shunter plays a vital role in the day-to-day running of the railway - especially behind the scenes at Aylsham Station.

No. 4's Origins & Build

Originally built in 1954 by Hudson-Hunslet, this compact four-wheel industrial locomotive started life as a two-foot gauge engine, designed for use in industrial and engineering environments.

The locomotive was partially rebuilt and re-gauged to the railway’s 15-inch gauge by apprentices at Eagit Ltd., who adapted the original frame and running gear for heritage railway use. It was then completely rebuilt by a small and dedicated team from The Friends of the Bure Valley Railway, who took on the restoration as a true labour of love.

Rebuilt for a New Life

During the rebuild, the locomotive was fitted with a diesel engine from a Peugeot 205 car, providing a reliable and economical power source. A hydraulic drive system was also installed to improve performance and make the shunter well-suited to yard work and engineering duties.

Following completion of the rebuild, No.4 “Hudson Hunslet” was formally handed over for active service on the Bure Valley Railway on 31st October 2004 - a proud moment for the volunteer team who brought it back to life.

Still Hard at Work on the Railway

Today, Hudson Hunslet is best known for its work as the Aylsham Station shunter, where it is used to move carriages, assist with track maintenance, and support engineering trains. One of its key tasks includes helping to operate the railway’s purpose-built flail machine, which is used to keep the line clear and tidy throughout the year.

Though not often seen at the head of passenger trains, this little locomotive is an essential part of keeping the Bure Valley Railway running smoothly behind the scenes.
